MELBOURNE MOONSHINE

Tucked away down a blue stone laneway in South Melbourne, behind closed doors, two home brew enthusiasts have been cooking up something very special. White lightning, mountain dew, hooch, moonshine. A white spirit with a colourful history.

Originating in the Appalachian mountains of North America, early English migrants produced the liquor at night to avoid discovery. Distilled illegally, Moonshine has a famous reputation particularly during the prohibition era of the 1920’s/30’s. Being an ‘un-aged whiskey’ the distillation turnaround is quick in comparison and meant that the illegal drink was quick to make and move.
Classically made from water, sugar, yeast and corn, Ben and Andrew source their corn from a Victorian farmer.

Growing up in South Carolina Ben grew up ‘shining’ where there is a strong culture for home brewing. When the two met and discussed their dissatisfaction of commercial liquor, a collaboration was born. It’s a really exciting time for the brand as they settle into their new digs, experiment with the distillation process and slowly get the product out on the market, “We want to take the time to get the product in the right venues”. Making legal deliveries in their refurbished Bedford ute couldn’t be more appropriate.

Currently behind the bar at select venues around Melbourne including Brunswick streets Black Pearl, Ben and Andrew have been encouraging Melbourne mixologists to have some fun with their product, posting recipes on their website.
